Get the right map for your trip

You can get lots of different types of maps for visits to conservation areas.

Short walks and rides: Use the maps in recreation brochures.

Longer day walks and overnight adventures: Carry and use detailed topographic maps. Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) produces 1:50,000 scale topographic maps for the whole of New Zealand.

Planning adventures: The Park Map series will help you plan bigger adventures. Park Maps show the whole park on one map, and on the back provide detailed information about flora, fauna, historic sites and recreation facilities.

New Topo50 maps replace NZMS260 1:50,000 series

From 23 September 2009, new Topo50 maps will replace LINZ's existing 1:50,000 scale NZMS260 series. The new map series will use the New Zealand Geodetic Datum 2000 (NZGD2000) and the New Zealand Transverse Mercator 2000 (NZTM2000) projection. This means that the grid co-ordinates (known as eastings and northings) will be different from those on the current NZMS260 maps.

GPS and Topo50

People using hand-held GPS will need to coordinate their GPS units with Topo50. Check out the factsheet on the LINZ website.
