Mount Peel Conservation Area is mountain terrain, with steep slopes running down to deeply incised gullies. Hunting is open all year for thar, red deer, chamois and pig.

This hunting area is covered by an 'open area permit' which can be obtained online or from a DOC office.

About this hunting block

General information

This block is mountain terrain with steep slopes running down to deeply incised gullies.

The highest point is Coal Hill at 1617 m.

Vegetation is mainly tussock with some patches of bush in lower gullies and on south facing slopes. The block is about 3,140 hectares.

This block is about 27 km from Geraldine.

Follow Main North Road (SH 79) for 8 km. Turn left just after the Orari Bridge onto Arundel Bridge Highway. After 3 km take the second left onto Coopers Creek Peel Forest Road. 1 km past Peel Forest township turn right onto Rangitata Gorge Road.

All access easements are marked on the Rangitata Gorge Road. Please keep to the marked track as easements cross private land.

  • MacKenzie Stream (unnamed on topographical maps is on the southern side of Horse Spur)
  • Lynn Stream
  • Raules Gully
  • Boundary Stream
  • Coal Hill


This hunting block is surrounded by private land; please do not trespass.

Dogs are not permitted in the Mt Peel Conservation Area.


There are no huts available in this hunting block. Note: The hut in Lynn Creek is on private land.


Open hunting. Hunting season is open all year for thar, red deer, chamois and pig.

Hunters are advised to check for current pesticide operations that may be in progress where they intend to hunt.
